Kurdistan Scientific Association
Kurdistan, in all its parts, has been under various hammers and the struggle has been hard for keeping it breathing. This was intensified in southern Kurdistan about two decades a go by Saddam Husain’s Ba’thist regime. At the heart of this was the educational and academic systems and organisations within it and all the oppressive actions and the twin embargoes are well recorded and known. As a counter measure, Kurdish intellectuals outside Kurdistan formed societies through which they could fill some of the gaps.
In the United Kingdom, the Support Committee for Salahaddin University (the only university in Kurdistan at the time) was formed over 18 years ago. This was later developed into the Kurdish Scientific and Medical Association (KSMA), the Kurdish Academic Network (KAN), the Support Committee for Higher Education in Kurdistan (SHEIK) and Kurdish Medical Association (KMA) all of which collectively made positive contributions to the survival of the educational systems in southern Kurdistan.
More recently and driven by the new climate, a major step was taken in a general meeting in London and a federation was formed under which members of all the associations organise their efforts and co-operate in promoting and supporting medical and scientific education in Kurdistan. The federation included two associations, one for medical and healthcare professional and one for academics and scientists. Our association, the latter, is the ‘Kurdistan Scientific Association’ (KSA) with the 11 elected members for its management (please see the committee section for more details)
Our main objectives are to strengthen the bond between our members, to promote active collaboration with the establishment in Federal Kurdistan and its academic institutions and participate in the developments using our members’ specialised skills as and when required.
